How Far Does a Cough Travel

A cough can travel up to six feet, which is about the length of an average person. The force of a cough can send droplets of saliva and mucus flying through the air at speeds up to 60 miles per hour. When someone with a cold or flu coughs, they release viruses into the air that can infect other people nearby.

That’s why it’s important to cover your mouth when you sneeze or cough, and to wash your hands often.

What is the Cdc Recommendations on Sneezing Etiqutte During the Covid-19 Pandemic?

As the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) continues to spread throughout the United States and around the world, people are understandably worried about contracting the disease. One simple way to help prevent its spread is by using proper sneezing etiquette. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend the following when sneezing or coughing:

• Use a tissue to cover your mouth and nose when you sneeze or cough. Immediately throw away used tissues in a lined trash can. If you don’t have a tissue, use your sleeve (not your hand) to cover your mouth and nose.

• Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing; washing with alcohol-based hand sanitizer is an alternative if soap and water are unavailable.

-If you don’t have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve or elbow, not your hands. -Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds to avoid spreading germs. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
